On Saturday night, while St Thomas’ and Ballygunner were playing out an epic in Portlaoise, I was above in Montrose in Dublin at the RTÉ Sports awards. We were all surrounded by some of the greatest sportspeople in this country but, still, I was half thinking, ‘Do they really know the kind of sporting drama that’s taking place down the road?’ I was nearly tempted to go around to some of the tables, start shaking people to tell them to tune in if they wanted to see real sporting drama, intrigue and excellence.

I know we all live in our own world where we think our sport is the best in the world. We’re often accused of being hurling snobs but when you witness what was produced in Portlaoise the other night, it just confirms what we have always believed – that we really do have one of the greatest games on this planet.
