Barbara brings her passion for mountains to new heights
Barbara O’Donnell guides walkers along rugged paths towards a calm, blue lake nestled among steep hills.
Ahead of her 50th birthday, Barbara O’Donnell decided to pause and reflect on what she truly wanted from life. She now says she feels on top of the world after choosing to retrain as a mountain leader.
When Barbara stepped away from her demanding role as an engineering manager in IT, everything changed.
Approaching a milestone birthday, the Castlemartyr-based woman took time out to reassess her future. The decision marked the beginning of a completely new chapter.
“My life has been transformed since I decided to train as a fully qualified and insured mountain leader,” she says.
A mother of two, Barbara has found a renewed sense of purpose.
Originally from the South of Germany, she says her connection to nature began early in life in the vast regional woodlands and the Alps.
“I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors,” she explains. “There’s something magical about mountains, forests, and winding paths that keeps pulling me back.”
Over the years, Barbara explored many of Ireland’s landscapes, discovering hidden locations and memorable experiences along the way.
In 2023, she made a decisive move.
“I took the summer off. I needed to pause.” That space led her back outdoors.
While between jobs, Barbara went on a hiking getaway to clear her head. At the time, she was still attending interviews and considering new career options.
But the mountains had already begun to shape her next step.
“I had always wanted to do a mountain skills course, but I was too busy,” she says. “Now, I finally made time for it.”

The transition wasn’t easy, but it was deeply rewarding. She immersed herself in training, developing the skills needed to guide others safely through mountainous terrain.
Drawing on expertise gained from decades of hiking, Barbara now creates unique and memorable experiences for others. She offers custom hikes, group hikes, and solo hikes across the south of Ireland, tailoring each journey to suit different abilities and interests.
Eager to share her passion, she founded NatureLed and now leads groups through scenic locations that highlight the beauty of the Irish landscape.
Joining one such outing in the Nire Valley at the foot of the Comeragh Mountains, it quickly becomes clear that she is a natural leader.
She gently encourages walkers to watch their footing and make good use of their hiking poles when needed, guiding them along rugged paths towards a calm, blue lake nestled among steep hills.
The climb is challenging, but the reward is undeniable.
“You forget the effort when you see views like this,” she says.
For many, the appeal of hiking lies in both the physical and mental benefits. The effort of climbing, combined with the beauty and solitude of nature, offers a powerful sense of escape.
Barbara believes the hills provide a welcome antidote to modern life.
“The focus it takes — watching your footing, staying present — it helps clear your mind,” she explains. “All the stress and deadlines just fade away.”
Her journey to qualification required significant dedication. She completed numerous hikes in all conditions, often pushing herself to the limit.
“I had to tick all the boxes,” she says. “That included doing at least 40 hikes, each around 16 km long, in all kinds of weather — sometimes even at night.” Each route had to be unique, adding further challenge to the process.
One moment remains particularly memorable.
“After my assessment climb in November, my assessor held out his fist,” she recalls. “I was so exhausted I didn’t understand at first. Then he took my hand and did a fist bump — I had passed.” It was a defining achievement.
Now fully qualified, Barbara embraces her new life outdoors.
“Being in nature has a calming effect on me,” she says. “In a world where we’re constantly bombarded, it’s so important to reconnect with the natural environment.”
She had set herself a clear goal to qualify before turning 50 — and she achieved it.
Her story is one of courage, change, and rediscovery — proof that it’s never too late to follow a different path.
