The lure of a blank-canvas was powerful for one couple who hadn’t intended staying in Midleton.

This four-bed, semi-detached home was built in 2002 and had been a rental for most of the next 20 years. The owners had lived in Dublin and in the US and then planned to rent in East Cork for a few months near one set of parents. Then, in 2022 they saw 53 The Paddocks, at Castleredmond.

“The house had been rented out and was looking ‘unloved’. As soon as we saw it, we just wanted to jazz it up, with a view to moving on again. But we put so much work and love in to it and are just really content in the area, so we stayed for more than four years.”

The couple have two young sons, so they are now upsizing and only moving “around the corner”, in the same development and within walking distance of Midleton town.

“It’s a great spot, about 20 minutes over the pedestrian bridge into Midleton, or out the Bailick Rd to the greenway. It’s about half an hour to walk to the Gaelscoil. In the summer, we’re very handy for beaches, such as Garryvoe, but in the winter we love going to Rostellan Woods.”

“It’s a real Saturday routine with the kids to head to the library, which has been recently done up, and then over to the farmers’ market for a ‘sausage on a stick’. It’s really great here in Midleton.”

The pair didn’t make any structural changes to the B3-rated house, though they upgraded windows and doors and pumped insulation into the walls. There’s also a new boiler and a Nest-controlled heating system.
