Built 13 years ago by thoughtful siblings for ageing parents, this well-turned-out property in Skahanagh Beg, Bantry, Cork, has been in the ownership of a couple with both cross-channel and Irish ties since 2022.

Retirees Steve and Wendy Dixon met during the pandemic and subsequently decided to move from Britain to Ireland. Wendy says: “We started in Rosslare and worked our way across the country, exploring the whole south coast. When we saw this house, we fell in love with it and with the location.”

It was Steve who fancied looking in Bantry; he’d worked in a Scottish fishing village where the promenade was called The Bantry to commemorate the Bantry labourers who built it.

“And when we walked into the property, it really felt like home,” says Wendy.

Its attractions are manifold: Light-filled rooms, south-facing views across the lush Mealagh Valley in an area known for woodland, walking trails, fairy forts, and standing stones. At 0.75a, the site size is generous.

The 185 sq m house — given a paint refresh by the Dixons, inside and out — was built to a high standard and a carpenter who visited was impressed by the quality and finish.

Rooms are comfortable and inviting; the kitchen, dining, living, and sun room are all open to each other. There’s an en-suite bedroom downstairs, and three bedrooms upstairs. The Dixons added a garden room, as well as a new water-percolation system.

The couple are sorry to sell, but new grandchildren overseas have prompted a move closer to Cork Airport. Denis Harrington, of Harrington Estates, is selling the B-rated home and he says it’s “superb, ideally a family home, with options to work remotely”. Bantry town centre is a 10-minute drive way.

The guide price is €595,000.

VERDICT: A quality home in a tremendously scenic location that will appeal to families, relocators, and, like the Dixons, retirees.
