This house at Kilcor in Castlelyons could fairly have had any number of horticultural monikers given the wealth of thriving plants and shrubs here. And it’s not clear if the house exerts a ‘green’ power over the various owners or if they arrived here by happy accident.

— Sycamore Lodge was built in 1964 for a Mrs BM Pyne of Kilcor Castle which is around 600m away.

— It was then bought by a Dutch couple who imported bulbs and flowers.

— And the woman who really brought the gardens to their current glory bought it in 1985.

Her nephew says his late aunt devoted a lifetime to designing and maintaining the gardens which features a sheltered patio, formal planting, and cottage garden style blooms. There’s also a pond, popular with frogs, and a polytunnel where the owner grew potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, and pumpkins.

And when there's a break from the enjoyable garden tasks there are views out over the valley and on to the Galtee Mountains to enjoy.

“It’s a lovely bright house with great space, but the gardens are absolutely glorious here,” notes auctioneer Paul O’Driscoll.

The house was designed by O’Flynn & Green Architects, formerly of South Mall, and has an attractive mosaic tiled hallway and views in every direction.
