Stable Lodge at Maulycorcoran near Clonakilty is characterful and charming enough to attract quite a diverse range of buyers.

“The location, 5km west of Clonakilty within a 10-minute drive of local beaches, makes it ideal for a holiday retreat but it will also appeal to young couples looking for a first home and older ones with an interest in gardening,” says Con O’Neill of Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill.

Describing the two-bedroom cottage as “delightful”, he points out that it comes with site of almost half an acre, so has room for expansion

Built as a thatch in the 18th century, it used to be part of the lands of the Castlefreke Estate and at one point belonged to a neighbouring farm with stables, which is how it got its name.

Since buying it in 2014, the current owner has upgraded and redecorated while being careful not to interfere with its traditional charm. Inside, the cottage has a sitting/dining room with a stove and an archway opening into a kitchen in a lean-to extension at the rear.

There’s also a bathroom and a sitting room, while the upstairs has two pretty bedrooms with Velux windows.Fitted with double glazing, the cottage has a G BER rating so may need an energy upgrade.

Outside Stable Lodge has well laid out, well kept, with tree-lined gardens and a variety of outbuildings.

VERDICT: Could make an idyllic West Cork home.

Neidín— a detached two-bed bungalow on Assumption Rd in Blackpool could make a cosy home for a young couple.

So says Angel Jordan of ERA Downey McCarthy, quoting a guide for €295,000 for the 1940s-built property which was upgraded by owners who made it their family home 10 years ago.

“They modernised the interior and put in double glazing and a kitchen units and, just two years ago, they also renovated the bathroom,” she reveals, explaining they had planned to extend upwards but have now decided to move to the country.

Offering 89sq m of living space, the bungalow has a timber-floored front sitting room with a bay window and a fireplace, in addition to a kitchen/diner with cream units at the rear. It also has upgraded tiled bathroom and two bedrooms — including one with a bay window and a fireplace at the front and a smaller one at the rear with fitted wardrobes.

Outside, Neidín has an enclosed front garden where the owners have fitted in a trampoline; and there’s also a patio and a garage at the rear. The garage is being used for storage but has a door at the side so could be used for parking, says Ms Jordan.

Fitted with double glazing and oil fired heating the bungalow has E2 BER.

“Because it’s both detached and well-presented it’s attracting a lot of first-time buyer interest,” says Ms Jordan adding that all available viewing lots were booked out during the week. The Property Price Register shows Neidín selling for €138,000 in 2016.

VERDICT: It’s rare to find a detached, move-in ready property at this price level, so a high level of interest can be expected.

The address for this colourful mid-terrace house in Cobh is 2 West View but locals will readily identify it as a ‘deck of cards’ house. The gable-fronted houses on the terrace, famous for its steep incline and colours, don’t come up for sale too often but this one is new to the market with a guide of €235,000.

A four-bed three-storey house with an E1 BER, it is in need of renovation. “But a new owner can apply for a vacant property refurbishment grant and also for SEAI grants,” says auctioneer Johanna Murphy.

VERDICT: Needs work but is colourful, central, and affordable.
