Take two 113-year-old adjoining labourers’ cottages and merge them and add extensions and upgrade everything. Oh, and be sure to include a hotel-style double bedroom with a Jacuzzi bath and keep some artefacts as a nod to the property’s former life. And then you’ll end up with a house like Crann Úll in Carrigogna, outside Midleton.

This four-bed detached home, on a 0.2-acre site, was constructed in around 1913. It was extended in the 1980s and was given its latest upgrade in 2008 by the current owners, who are now downsizing.

Lean-tos were knocked and walls were cladded and insulated and patios and spacious living areas created. It wasn’t all out with the old, though — an original water pump was restored and given a new lease of life as a sculptural feature in the front garden.

“That pump is so nice now that we have it cemented into place, so that’s staying,” says owner, Shirley.

Inside, quite a bit of modernisation was needed: “When we took up the old wooden floor, there was just earth underneath, so all that had to be sorted out.”

They used the services of Midleton-based Harrington & O’Flynn Consulting Engineers and ended up with even more space than anticipated. “We’ve had communions and confirmations here with easily 80-100 people,” Shirley says.

That generous space — and the use of interlocking stone in the renovations — also meant teenagers’ music didn’t bother parents even during the long lockdowns of a few years back. “That time is really when I realised the importance of space and quiet time to ‘recharge’.”

Also key to that feeling of respite and relaxation is the very spacious main bedroom, with its en-suite bathroom complete with Jacuzzi bath: “I wanted colours that bring calm and I wanted it to feel like a hotel suite, so I used lots of white and gold.”

The large garden has three apple trees, two eating apples, and one with cooking apples, which also gave the house its name.

“We’ve loved the tranquility at the back and the fact that this isn’t a busy road at the front — it’s a five-minute walk to the local Educate Together school and you’ve got East Cork Golf Club and Driving Range really close by, too.”

“Midleton town itself is about 3km or a five-minute drive away and you’ve got Supervalu, Tesco, Lidl, and Aldi supermarkets, as well as small, family-run cafés and restaurants, such as Zuni Coffee & Deli, Ferrit & Lee Restaurant, and Cornerstone Pizza,” says Kyle Kennedy, of Kennedy Estate Agents, adding that the train station is also only minutes away.

That south-facing rear garden, with two generous patio spaces to optimise the light and views over surrounding fields, has proven big enough for an adult-size pop-up swimming pool as well.

And back in to the kitchen, where you may end up making juices or apple crumble with your own crop of fruit, there’s an electric Belling cooker, a Belfast sink, granite worktops and island unit, and a very inviting-looking window seat.

VERDICT: A creative and sensitive merging of old and new at this large, but cosy, family home.
