NO home could compete with the drama of the landscape in Schull, so the best option is to keep things simple.

That’s sort of how it feels at this house in Gloun, sitting pretty beyond the foothills of rugged Mount Gabriel.

It’s been in the same ownership since 2007, when it was bought as a holiday home.

“We were attracted to Gloun because of its idyllic views and very peaceful atmosphere,” the current owners say, adding that the family they bought it from had lived in it fulltime and kept it in excellent condition. That family are still in the locality and became good friends and neighbours to the new owners.

The new owners did make a few changes, opening up the downstairs rooms to create a more open plan space.

Then last year, they did a total refurb, laying new floors in the kitchen/dining areas, and in the sitting room.

They installed a wood-burning stove in the sitting room too, before shifting their focus to the downstairs bathroom, where a new walk-in shower was installed.

Toilet, sink and tiles were replaced too for good measure.

The interior is fresh as a daisy now and the look is unfussy, bright and inviting. Unsurprisingly, it’s been doing well as an AirBnB since the couple began renting it out in June.

“We’ve had very positive feedback,” they say.

It’s a fine size for a rental or holiday home as there are four large double bedrooms, two apiece on each of the ground and first floors.

Skylights let in plenty of natural light in the upstairs rooms and regular windows frame beautiful views.

The main bathroom is upstairs too, and there’s a shower room downstairs. The utility/laundry room is off the kitchen.

Prospective buyers planning to work remotely could make the most of a very large landing by turning it into a home office, the owners say.

The garden is large too, the bones of an acre, so if new owners wanted to extend, they could do so, subject to planning. As auctioneer Liam Hodnett of Hodnett Forde points out, the site itself is magnificent, as it faces south west, “with extensive, unspoiled views of the surrounding rural landscape and a distant sea view”.

A timberframed and clad workshop/store to the side of the house could be used to store canoes or bikes, if new owners were intent on making the most of the outdoor lifestyle on offer in Schull.

Beautiful Ballyrisode Beach is close by “and is a lovely safe beach”, Mr Hodnett says.

The 137 sq m c20-year-old property is not isolated, it’s in an area with a mixture of permanent and holiday homes, and Mr Hodnett feels its future could go either way.

“There’s lots of interest and I’ve already had an offer at the asking. I’ve had potential buyers fly in from the UK to view it as a holiday home, with a long term plan to settle here eventually as they have connections in Cork City,” he says. There’s local Irish interest too, among people looking for a permanent home in turnkey condition.

The owners are selling up for two reasons: their children have grown up and the couple has relocated from Cork City to Clonakilty, so they no longer require a holiday home in Schull.

The guide price for their home, which is 4 km from Schull village, is €335,000. Cork City is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car.

VERDICT: A delightful, no-nonsense home in a relaxed and scenic setting.
