Garden Q&A: Is it too late to cut my lawn in December?

The recent dips in temperatures will have slowed grass growth, but it's not too late to cut your lawn, says Peter Dowdall. File picture

Question

My grass is still quite long, is it too late to cut it for this year?

Answer

I hope not, for I still need to cut my own lawn. The temperatures over the last month have been so high that there was still a lot of growth.

The recent dips, though only temporary, will certainly have slowed growth right down. It’s not too late to cut the grass, I often do it through December, depending on the growth.

However, the two times that you should avoid mowing are when the ground is waterlogged, which could well apply to most gardens at the moment, and when the ground and grass is actually frozen.

Avoid cutting in those instances but apart from that, yes, you can still cut the grass.
