From mudrooms to Miamicore: Bright ideas for our homes

The latest viral TikTok trend to fill up design lovers’ feeds is the post-modern pastel revival and it sure is the perfect antidote to any lingering winter blues. Also branded as Miamicore, it’s the ideal way to give any space a spring/summer refresh.

Think 70s and 80s aesthetics and dial up the fun factor with blush, lilac, lemon, baby blue and mint.
Embrace the kitsch nature of the look by accessorising your space with geometric print rugs and wall art, or if you prefer a more grown-up take on it all, introduce natural greenery, rattan lampshades and pampas grass to balance the vibrancy of the colour.
To really nail the trend, consider the Ted Baker Highgate sofa range, available exclusively at DFS, which has a mid-century profile that is elevated with a luxe velvet finish and quintessentially Ted Baker gold accents. For an uplifting vibe, why not try the DFS Java sofa, available in a powder blue shade from Dulux called Bright Skies.

A colleague at Irish Examiner Towers loves dreaming up names for paint colours. So, I’m hoping he’ll be first in the queue, brush in hand, for this competition organised by Fleetwood.
The Irish paint company is inviting the public to choose and name a new colour to be added to its permanent colour palette.
If you win, you’ll get the opportunity to repaint a room in your home in the new colour you selected and named.
Cork interior designer Sinead Cassidy is leading the campaign along with her colleagues in the business, Alison Dunne, Aodhain Scallan and Patricia Wakeley, from Laois, Wexford and Cavan, all of whom have chosen a particular shade to win.

Sinead's choice is a calm maritime blue steeped in grey with green undertones. “I was drawn to this colour as it captures the tranquil yet vibrant nature of the ocean,” she tells Home.
“This is a colour that can bring a serene and grounding ambience to any space. Surrounding yourself with colours that are evocative of a place that you love can only be a positive addition to your daily surroundings!”
The campaign comes as Fleetwood conducted a survey via Opinions.ie which found that over 8 in 10 (81%) would consider repainting a room in their home if they thought it would improve their mood.
The closing date for entries is April 12 and the winning colour and its accompanying name will be revealed at the Ideal Home Show on April 26 at the RDS. The winner will receive an in-home colour consultation with the winning designer, with the runners-up to receive interior design consultation slots, in-store vouchers and free paint.

Boot rooms or mudrooms have marched back into our consciousness. They offer a quiet luxury and practicality. Limerick company Cucine Lube offers a timeless and discreet space here. It’s crafted and installed by the County Limerick company.

We love the look of this sophisticated, functional space that stores outerwear, footwear and all sorts of essentials while keeping the rest of the home blissfully clutter-free.
