* I usually view the week before Halloween as the last chance to transplant any brassicas - spring cabbages, et al. And also to plant onions and garlic. If you’re doing that then still cover the lot with netting to protect them from birds.

* We are only noticing the chill now but if you have composting worms then it’s a good idea to insulate the bins with bubble wrap or charity shop jumpers – it’s about protection and productivity — they grind to a halt in cold weather.
