Hazy days of autumn

The low September sun reflects beautifully on flowers ‘Heavenly Blue’ and ‘Blue Spire’, says Peter Dowdall.

Hazy days of autumn

SEPTEMBER in the garden is perfect. Growth is beginning to slow, which is no harm, because so am I. Every year seems to go by so much quicker than the one before, but this year has just been something else: months and seasons have just whizzed past, before I’ve even had a chance to draw breath, and here we are now in September.

Many of the perennials are preparing for their hibernation under the soil. I know the days are getting shorter, but the sunlight at this time of the year, as the sun is lowering in the sky and reflecting on the trees, which are beginning to take on their autumnal colours, is magical. Sure, we mightn’t be enjoying as much fine weather as we did during the summer, but enjoy every bit of good weather this month and next, for, before too long, we will be facing into the winter once more.
