HOW to shield a garden from passers-by is one of the most common questions I get asked here in the garden centre.

Usually the answer is to plant some type of hedging. Privacy is only one of the many benefits of hedging, it can also be used to establish a boundary around properties, used as a windbreak or to hide unattractive views and buildings.

When deciding on what type of hedging to plant it’s important to take these considerations into account — there’s no point in planting a hedge that will lose its leaves in winter if one is looking for privacy.
