Checkered

WITH so many new types of pattern and activity on interior surfaces, traditional dots, florals, stripes and patchwork are having to work hard at making their presence felt.

Checkered

Stripes are in prone position, and nowhere is this more effective than on wallpaper where traditionally verticals created the effect of security bars on windows. Positioned closely together, they can also cause a dazzling effect, so you’re still seeing stripes after you look away.

Broad horizontals are the way to go, interspersed with a few narrower lines which together have the happy effect of making a room seem larger. But keep to the same colourway or family of neutral — pale grey and mid grey, cream with beige — or you’ll cancel out the space enhancing effect.
