MANY gardeners allow their ornamental grasses and woody-stemmed late-season perennials intact throughout winter in order to provide ‘interest’.

The fashion insists on leaving the garden uncut until late February, and to try to look at it as a changing work of art. I have never subscribed to this.

Good photographs in books help promote the idea but the illustrations are taken when a white frost has made everything sparkle or when a sunny winter’s day plays on the disintegrating lumps of ornamental grass.
