This week, in the second of our new Munster Eye series, we profile bungalows across the six counties (the other six).

Some are in excellent shape, or just need a little TLC; others require a bricks-and-mortar version of Operation Transformation.

The homes we have selected are within a defined price bracket: nothing less than €185,000, nothing more than €230,000.

Bungalows are scarce in Ennis, says selling agent Cormac O'Sullivan of DNG O’Sullivan Hurley, and this detached offering on Dalcassian Drive is a sound one.

He reckons it will hold particular appeal for retirees looking to downsize and live on the flat, near the town centre.

“You can leave the car in the drive and stroll into town and you’ll be there in no time at all,” Mr O’Sullivan says.

Coach House is in a mature part of town, unlikely to see much further development “so what’s around you will be what’s around you in the longterm,” the auctioneer says.

With three bedrooms and two bathrooms and fronting onto a vast green, it’s also a good prospect as a family home, which it has been in the past.

Coach House measures 106 sq m and sits on a decent site, with both front and rear garden. The latter is well shielded from prying eyes.

Mr O’Sullivan predicts a buyer who sees it as “their final move”, and who has been around the property market before “and knows what they are looking at”.

Tillys went “sale agreed” last year and while that sale unfortunately fell through, auctioneer Seán Carmody of Charles McCarthy Estate Agents doesn’t think it will sit on the market much longer.

“It’s a great location, perfect for an older couple looking to downsize. It’s close to the medical centre, to the shops, the town centre, everything is near at hand,” Mr Carmody says.

Bungalows are always in demand, he says, adding that this one will take “a small bit of money to modernise”, but nothing major.

There’s a real old-world charm to the gardens, which are front and rear, and one of two sheds at the bottom of the back garden has previously functioned as a sunroom.

Mr Carmody says the sheds could be adapted to a study or a home office, with the option of working or studying in peace, away from the main residence.

Tilly has four bedrooms and two bathrooms and is well maintained. A new boiler was fitted recently.

Mr Carmody says the property may also appeal to an investor or a family.

This rudimentary Dunquin bungalow has no notions about itself despite its peerless location.

King of all it surveys from its clifftop perch on the Dingle Peninsula, what it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for in vista.

Its small size - 500 sq ft - can only be a blessing because with views like that, the less housework, the better.

A deckchair and an appreciation of rugged beauty are the only pre-requisites for this purchase which is currently under offer at €165,000.

How the bungalow came about in this location in the first place is moving - the local authority built it for a widow c50 years ago after her husband was tragically drowned nearby.

John Diony O’Connor of John Diony O’Connor Auctioneers says while the two-bedroom bungalow needs modernisation, whoever buys it will do so for the view and the acre that comes with it.

“It’s a sensitive site,” he says, which translates as limited scope for extending the property, although planning laws would permit a 400 sq ft extension to the rear, providing it does not exceed existing roof level.

While it looks like the kind of property that would draw plenty of overseas interest, at the moment all of the calls are native, Mr O’Connor says.

There's a real touch of class to this smart-looking detached bungalow, following a comprehensive revamp.

The upgrade included re-wiring, a new roof and insulation, making it a cosy, elegant prospect for whoever the new owner may be.

Selling agent Geraldine Leddin of GL Auctioneers is predicting on either a young couple starting out, or an older person downsizing.

“If you are retiring and looking for something at ground level, this is a great buy,” she says.

It also has potential for a family, Ms Leddin says, pointing out that there’s “a big site out the back”, as well as three stables, should a home for a pony feature on that househunter checklist.

Ms Leddin says the current owners are moving for work reasons, and that viewings have been brisk at this bright and airy home, where a potential third bedroom currently functions as a home office.

The Master bedroom, with a striking blue hue, has an impressive walk-in wardrobe and an en suite, while the second bedroom is also a double.

The lounge is open-plan and a conservatory/ fully-enclosed patio overlooks the rear garden. There are also two sheds to the rear.

Sometimes the description ‘turnkey’ is used rather liberally, but not in the case of this pristine bungalow which has undergone an €18,000 price drop.

From the gorgeous hallway and right through the house, high quality finishes are evident.

The seller loves the location, but has built a new home, hence the move, says Julie Fogarty of Sherry FitzGerald Fogarty,

The four-bedroom detached property on Mary St is “an easy stroll” to the town centre, and, like other bungalows featured here, could well suit someone who is retiring and looking for a quality property in a convenient location.

“Or it could also suit a first-time buyer with a young family,” Ms Fogarty says, “as it’s opposite St Mary’s Primary School .”

Ms Fogarty says bungalows like this one - which has been rewired, replumbed and re-roofed - are hard to come by.

A double garage out the back could prove a draw for chaps who like tinkering.

“A lot of men love that bit of space for tools and equipment,” Ms Fogarty says.

The property has “lovely high ceilings”, and a white marble fireplace with stove in the sitting room.

“I love the privacy of the site. It’s a good buy,” Ms Fogarty says.

The recent €10,000 price drop in the cost of this bungalow (down from €195,000) makes it a more attractive prospect, especially as it’s located in a popular residential area, according to Tim Hutchinson of Hutchinson Auctioneers.

“It’s near the city centre, schools, shops. It’s ideal for someone who is downsizing and wants convenience,” Mr Hutchinson says.

Previously rented out and vacant since the tenants moved on, this semi-detached property would benefit from a little TLC.

“It’s mostly the decor that needs attention. It could be done up on a room-by-room basis. It’s in very reasonable shape,” Mr Hutchinson says.

With a front and rear garden and four bedrooms, it could also suit a small family, he adds.

No 44 is within walking distance of the Hypercentre, which includes a variety of retail, including Supervalu.

Interest in it has been “steady” since it went on the market last June.
