THE expensive €950,000 asking price for this detached house at Oysterbed Road near Sneem isn’t unexpected for a large property in a scenic South Kerry spot which locals have called ‘Millionaires’ Row.’

“Oysterbed Road, which runs between the Sneem Road and Oysterbed pier has been called this because it has several large properties, some of which are owned by international business people and famous artists,” reveals auctioneer Majella O’Sullivan.

The obvious attractions for these buyers include spectacular views of Kenmare Bay, and the seclusion of a place which George Bernard Shaw once described as part of a dream world with “ long sea views and intricate walks”.

Blending into the landscape, this stone- fronted dormer property has in excess of 2,200 sq ft of living space but has been decorated cottage-style with a multitude of traditional features including timber ceiling beams and rough plastered walls.

Architect-designed, it was built by a local builder in 1998 and bought by its current owners in 2002.

They put on a large extension at the side to create space for an extra bathroom as well as a spacious en suite bedroom with a sauna , finishing it on the outside with the same local stone that had been used originally.

Located within a five-minute walk from Oysterbed Pier, the property is accessed by a gravel driveway and has over an acre of gardens with lawns and trees as well as areas of rocky outcrop.

Looking out on to Kenmare bay at the rear, it has views across the estuary and its rocky islands from the first floor balcony and from several windows in the main living areas.

At one side it has an extra spacious kitchen living dining area with traditional- style exposed timber beams on the ceiling, rough plastered walls, flagstone flooring, and a large stone fireplace.

The kitchen has oak units which are quite simple and traditional looking.

The only obviously modern features are the many sets of patio doors which frame the views and let in much more light than you would get in an old cottage.

Across at the other side of the property is the newer wing which has a generous- sized, timber-floored en suite bedroom with sea views through a large bay window at the rear.

Alongside this bedroom is a timber-panelled sauna and a newly-added bathroom.

In the centre of the property there is another bathroom and two bedrooms, one with sea views.

A set of stairs in the living area leads up to a galleried landing on the first floor and to a room which wasprobably the original master bedrooms which has an en suite, a walk in wardrobe and a balcony with bay views.

The gardens, looked after all year round by a caretaker, have been planted with mature trees and a few tropical looking ones.

There is a stone-faced out building at the side with a laundry room and a stone patio for taking in the views.

Ms O’Sullivan says that Oysterbed Road properties are quite rare to the market.

The Property Price register shows just one sale on an unnamed house in 2017 for €800,000.

Located 3km from both Sneem and Parknasilla , the property is within half an hour’s drive from beaches at Castlecove and Derrynane.

“Sneem has amenities, pubs, and restaurants and at Parknasilla you can book spa treatments, play golf, and dine in the restaurant,” says Ms O’Sullivan.

She has already booked in a viewing with a US buyer and says she is receiving enquiries from international buyers as well as Dublin ones.

VERDICT: Has scenery, space, and seclusion enough to make any millionaire smile.
