Back to the future for Cork's Carrig House

Here’s an opportunity to restore a once-dazzling Cork residence to its former glory, says Eve Kelliher.

It was once one of the most beautiful houses in Cork and Carrig House deserves to be restored to that status, according to its selling agent.

Planning approval was received from Cork City Council on January 31, 2018, and the total gross floor area of the completed building will be in the region of 6,000sq ft, notes Seán McCarthy of ERA Downey McCarthy.

Formerly known as Bellvue House, Carrig House, in Glanmire, “retains its symmetry and graceful proportions, despite its derelict condition”, adds Mr McCarthy.

The five-bay, two-storey period property was built around 1820. “The high and wide roofline still dominates the Lower Glanmire Road and the building continues to make a valuable contribution to the surrounding area,” says Mr McCarthy.

The tall grouped chimney stacks, render detail and carved trefoil headed windows are among the many surviving notable features. “This architectural gem offers unobscured views over the River Lee, Páirc Uí Chaoimh and The Marina,” adds Mr McCarthy.

The “magnificent property” could easily be restored as one of Cork’s finest trophy homes or equally a company HQ (subject to planning permission), he says.

It currently has a single-storey crenellated, former entrance bay to west and single-storey screen to the east, hipped slate roof with coupled rendered corbelled chimney stacks and cast-iron gutters on overhanging eaves.

Set in its own grounds the property is accessed via a bridge servicing five other properties which was built at a cost of around €12 million, adds Mr McCarthy.

VERDICT: New lease of life on the horizon for rooms with a view.
