A former parochial hall, this quirky cottage in Drimoleague has had a whole new lease of life, writes Trish Dromey

IT WOULD be hard to find another West Cork home that’s as quirky and interesting as the old Parochial Hall in Drimoleague.

As indicated by the sign above the door it was built in 1905, at which point it served as a meeting place for members of the Church of Ireland community in the locality. A high-ceilinged building with a stage, it was used for plays and social events.

Ten years ago, the current owner bought the disused property and renovated it, turning it into a highly individual three-bed cottage which has since been rented to a variety of visitors from around the world on Airbnb.

“It has tremendous character, enjoys scenic countryside views and is located at the edge of Drimoleage village which is now the walking centre for West Cork,” says auctioneer Pat McGuire, who is seeking offers of €180,000.

The owner re-roofed the property and put in Velux windows but kept the original exterior and porch. During renovations, a first floor was added, and double glazing and oil heating went in. It has approximately 120sq m (1,300sq ft) of space, including a large basement used for storage which is accessed externally.

In the hallway, the owners have created a timber-floored living area with a fireplace. To the rear, there’s a sitting room with exposed ceiling beams and double doors opening on to a balcony. The cottage also has a utility/shower room and a kitchen as well as a bathroom and three bedrooms.
