IT’s the real deal: a roadside West Cork residential bar which started its days next to a 19th century stage-coach stop, serving a wide catchment, has local history and on-going appreciative local support in its favour.

But, now after five generations in the O’Driscoll family hands, the spotless and good-sized O’Driscolls bar on an acre along the R586 between Bantry and Drimoleague is up for sale: it’s ready for new owners, though the exquisite raised letting of the O’Driscoll surname above the door may well remain.

Its on the market with a €295,000 guide price quoted by estate agent Ray O’Neill of Sherry FitzGerald in Skibbereen, who notes that it has profile on a popular tourist and commuter road to Bantry, and is now the only bar for quite some distance.

It’s got 2,000 sq ft in all, with five first floor bedrooms, is on an acre, with river frontage by a pretty bridge to the rear, is near the local GAA club, and has been known for decades as a hospitable house.

It was first opened as a pub and forge by a Humphrey O’Driscoll in 1800, as the location was a stage coach stop, and the current vendor Paul O’Driscoll is the great great grandson of that founder. It also operated as de facto boarding guesthouse for a while, notably when the Whiddy Oil Terminal was being built in the 1960’s.

And, its acre to the back by the river also accommodated tourists travelling West Cork’s back roads in horse drawn caravans, also around the 1960s, so a new owner might like to do a glamping/Airbnb equivalent, given the proximity to hillwalks, Bantry, and the coastal Wild Atlantic Way.

  • Also for sale with Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill in West Cork, meanwhile, is the former Doloree House, a more modern 1,750 sq ft four-bed residential property with attached 2,000 sq ft restaurant and commercial kitchen.

Doloree House is set on the main N71 at Tulligee, near the Pike and Lisavaird Co-op, between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery a mile or two from beaches at the Warren, Owenahinch and Long Strande/Castlefreke.

Mr O’Neill guides at €395,000 and says “it affords an opportunity to acquire a quality home and adaptable business premises that is currently laid out as a restaurant but is easily adaptable to other uses.”

  • Finally, while O’Driscolls’ at Aughaville personifies the best of rural pub life, and may attract a lifestyle buyer from outside the area or even from overseas, a Cork city licensed premises new to market is likely to have a city-based buyer appeal.

Listed this week at €650,000 via agent Cearbhall Behan of Behan Irwin Gosling is Cavanaghs, a double-fronted bar with offices overhead on Liberty Street next to the Raven bar and near the Courthouse.

It’s also close to the Washington Street strip, and the bar was formed after amalgamation of adjoining shop and a butchers.
