Small but it packs a West Cork punch

Cooldurragha, Union Hall, Co Cork - €195,000

Size: 64 sq m (695 sq ft)

Bedrooms: 2

Bathrooms: 1

BER: F

THE saying “the best goods come in small parcels” rin gs true here at West Cork’s Cooldurragh: the diminutive and renovated bungalow is packed with charm, and blessed both in its immediate and more general location.

“General” location is out the coastal boreens from Union Hall and Glandore, off the beaten track and all the more glorious for it.

Specifically, the exact location sees it looking out over the water of Lough Cluhir, one of two

small lakes just south of Union Hall and much favoured by swans and other birdlife.

Just shy of 700 sq ft, and on a lovely site of 0.3 of an acre with detached garage, this two-bed bungalow/cottage is listed with agent Olivia Hanafin of Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill and she quotes an asking price of €195,000 for the chance to buy the tidy, very well kept home, with crisp, box bay windows either side of a deep and centrally-set, sheltered front door..

Centrally heated, it has a living room with dining table in one bay window, plus fireplace, the updated kitchen’s behind, as is the bathroom, and the two bedrooms are off to the right of an internal hall, with a fireplace, bay window and views from the 14ft by 11ft front bedroom.

It’s set just a short walk from Rineen Pier, a popular place for launching boats, dinghies and kayaks, with Castletownshend just across the inlet from the shingle and sandy spit at Rineen.

There’s a number of coves and beaches in the vicinity, including Squince and Carrigillihy and boat trips to nearby Rabbit island are popular in summer.

A longer walk is back to Union Hall itself, and bustling towns like Clonakilty and Skibbereen are an almost equidistant 15-20 minute drive by car.

This offer could suit would-be buyers as a holiday, full-time or retirement option home, says Ms Hanfin, and among the residents further out the headland at Reen is the Australian artist John Kelly, whose sculpture gardens are open for public viewing (appointment via Uilinn Arts Centre) on August 1 as part of Skibberen Art Week.

VERDICT: special setting
