A majestic makeover pays off for this Cork City terrace house

A decked patio and a Mediterranean-style makeover have transformed Cork city’s No 175 Blarney Street from what the standard terrace house that it used to be.

The three-bed property has now become so interesting that it’s been checked out by close to 4,000 viewers online in the last week.

Terry Hayes of Barry Auctioneers says the transformation was carried out by the current owners who bought it 15 years ago.

“They extended it at the back, redecorated, and exposed some stone walls and beams on the inside. The interior has the look and feel of a country cottage while the timber decking at the rear offers magnificent city views — you can see right out to the river and across to the airport.”

Behind the still very traditional looking street frontage, there’s now a 1,184 sq ft property with a C3 BER rating.

The hall door opens into a sitting room with pale terracotta walls and a stone fireplace with a stove as well as a doorway leading to the kitchen which has rough, plastered, whitewashed walls contrasting with bright blue units — a colour combination which brings Greek island cottages to mind.

Beyond the kitchen is an extension with a vaulted room and Velux windows and a full glass wall.

If it weren’t for the fact that its is possible to identify St Fin Barre’s Cathedral in the distance, someone looking out from this room might well imagine they were in the Mediterranean.

Outside there’s timber decking with panoramic views (including to the fire-ravaged Good Shepherd Convent below) and steps down to a 45m long garden.

Upstairs there’s a landing space used for bookshelves, a bathroom, and three timber-floored bedrooms, including one which has an en-suite with a jacuzzi bath.

Guiding at €215,000, Mr Hayes says it’s attracting huge interest because of its views and décor and also because of its convenient location, within a short walk of the city centre.

It’s the second property with a decked patio to cause a stir on Blarney St in recent weeks.

Bidding on a one bed at No 149 quickly went €40,000 above its €160,000 asking price.
