Vantage points for looking out over Killmakillogue Harbour and Kenmare Bay and across to the Macgillycuddy Reeks don’t get much better than Hilltop Cottage.

And, scenically located renovated properties on Beara Peninsula don’t get much prettier than this 100-year-old stone farmhouse at Collorus Point which has been decorated in traditional Irish style but with Gallic flair by its owner.

Selling agents DNG Timothy O’Sullivan say it is a beautifully restored property with stunning views. This verdict is endorsed by over 70 reviewers who posted on Tripadvisor and Airbnb websites after renting it.

Most are Europeans and English people, but some are American – all of them rhapsodize about the cottage, and most especially the sea and mountain views.

On the market with a guide of €285,000, it’s an 845 sq ft property which has half an acre of organically tended gardens.

Bought by a French lady in the early 2000s, Hilltop Cottage has a great deal of character and charm, with rough plastered walls, exposed timber ceiling beams and flower-filled gardens.

In addition to painting it red and white, and sympathetically restoring it the owner also added insulation and modern comforts, including double glazing and oil central heating.

Inside the red door at the front there is a long open plan living/dining room with timber flooring, exposed beams and a stone fireplace with a stove.

Other rooms include a small kitchen at the side with fitted units, a shower room and a tiny utility area at the rear.

An open thread staircase in the living area leads to the first floor which has a bedroom with a timber panelled floor and ceiling, as well as a bathroom with a free-standing bath.

The gardens outside have been planted with herbs, vegetables and a multitude of flowers.

At a distance from the cottage is an 80 sq metre timber chalet/workshop which has slate flooring, a kitchenette, a WC and a stove.

Outside this chalet there’s a small conservatory and a patio and elsewhere in the gardens there are outhouses and chicken coops.

Located on an elevated site overlooking Collorus Harbour and facing the Macgillycuddy Reeks, Hilltop cottage is set against a backdrop of the Caha Mountains.

It’s located 19 miles from Kenmare and 16 from Castletownbere.

VERDICT: The views are tops
