YOU don’t need to be a movie star or a millionaire to own a West Cork island home with magnificent views of Roaring Water Bay — Sandy Island and the Catalogues have just become available for a guide of just €350,000.
Although it sounds a bit like a 1960s show band, Sandy Island and the Catalogues is actually a group of six islands at the mouth of Baltimore Harbour.
The largest, Sandy Island has 10 acres of land and a 1,655 sq ft cottage and, rather surprisingly, is rocky rather than sandy.
The Catalogues, taking their name from ceirtleoga, small balls of yarn, collectively account for around eight acres.
Selling this property for the third time in 40 years, auctioneer Charles McCarthy says he’s always happy to take on properties in Roaring Water Bay — since the attractiveness of the name guarantees interest even before viewers get a chance to experience the magnificence of the views.
“Sandy Island is in a sheltered area of the bay protected by Heir Island on the West of it and Sherkin Island to the south ’’ says Mr McCarthy, adding that it can be reached by a five minute boat trip from Turk Head and a five minute one from Baltimore.
Forty years ago Mr McCarthy sold the island to an English man who built the cottage on it.
Within the last 20 years he sold the property for the second time to the current owners, who also own Lissavaird estate.
They carried out extensive renovations to the cottageand added a large wrap around conservatory.
The island has a pier and a slipway located within a short distance from the three-bed cottage which is situated in the centre of the island.
Accommodation inside is quite traditional and includes a large L-shaped sitting room with a stone fireplace and tiled flooring as well as a kitchen.
There’s also a bathroom and three wooden-floored bedrooms, including one with an en suite.
Wrapping around one side of the cottage is a long L-shaped conservatory with seats positioned to take in the spectacular sea views.
Mr McCarthy says the property has been well cared for and has double glazed windows, electric heaters and solar panels.
There’s a grassy area around the cottage but the majority of the island surface is rugged, rocky and wild. Close to the pier there’s also a small shingle beach.
As an island home with views of Roaring Water Bay, the ocean , surrounding islands and the rugged West Cork coastline, Sandy Island cottage definitely qualifies as unique.
Mr McCarthy believes it may well be the most affordable West Cork property, which includes a home and several islands and says he has already shown it to viewers from Ireland and the UK.
Should there be a movie star or millionaire in search of peace and quiet, (Brad, it’s waiting for you), and a larger island home with views in Roaring Water Bay, he can offer West Skeagh Island which has 33 acres, three cottages and a price tag of €1.95 million.
Spanish Island, meanwhile, is a 130-acre island on the agent’s books with a guide of €450,000.
The purchaser won’t need to be a millionaire but they will need a boat.
