Country cool with style in Glentane, Midleton
It’s the second time around for what’s billed as “a once in a lifetime opportunity” to get a modern, high-end country home with land for horses, and apples trees for the same animals to pilfer, at this east Cork spot called Glentane.
Built to an unstinting specification at the peak of the market around 2008 (the owners said they bought the abundance of Crema Marfil flooring, oak boards, and tile more by the tonne than by the square metre!), this long, wide and rangy bungalow home runs up to 4,000 sq ft, with any amount of above-standard finishes.
It was first put for sale last October at €525,000 and quickly went ‘sale agreed’ around this sum for its vendors who were headed back to the UK.
However, the sale fell through, and now the agents Collins O’Meara in Fermoy have it just relaunched for their disappointed vendors who did much of the design and detailing day one. As summer come to a close and schools return within weeks, they’ve dropped the asking price to €450,0000 and report early, renewed interest from a wide buying cohort.
Auctioner Denis Collin notes “the finish is second to none, it really is top classs and because it comes on five acres it’s catching the eye of lifestyle relocters, from all over the country, not just around Munster or Cork.”
The land, in paddocks and a young orchard, allows for grazing for ponies and horses, and while there’s a detached garage, and a shed, there’s not yet proper stables built for the long haul so that’s one of the few tasks left for any horse-keen new occupants.
Sort of T-shaped, the house itself has the bulk of its 4,000 sq ft at ground level, with four bedrooms below and overhead are already floored adaptable spaces off a large carpeted landing/family room, capable of yielding two more bedrooms, or a study, media room and a dressing room.
Other than those optional spaces, the ground floor has a double aspect drawing room at one end with formal fireplace and a 16kw multi-fuel stove, there’s a similar sized and aspected living room at the far end, again with an insert stove and built-in display shelving, and this chimney breast backs then to the double-depth tiled kitchen/dining room, which has a further stove in a white marble fireplace for additional creature comforts.

Between the trio of stoves, there’s a 32kw heat output capability, and one serves a back-up/dual fuel supply for the central heating when the oil’s not needed.
Auctioneer Denis Collins says the home has been custom-designed, with period-style features, quality marble fireplaces, solid marble and dark oak floors, and top quality bathrooms, and traditional style cast iron radiators: it has, he notes, a well chosen mix of modern comforts (rainfall type showers, multi-fuel stoves, wired for sound) and finishes with more traditional style features such as roll-top baths, chandelier lights and calming wall colours.
In keeping with the period aura, several of the bathrooms are quite quaintly described as ‘powder rooms’ in the sales literature, while back-up rooms are billed as a boot room, and a pantry.
Set against a wooded backdrop, and with a veg growing tunnel plus detached lofted double garage with guest apartment conversion scope, this Glentane home’s located seven miles north of Midleton, near Dungourney and Cork city’s a 20-plus minute drive away.
Several of its rooms open to the grounds, with a canopied deck area off one reception room, and the en suite master bedroom has French doors to a kitchen garden. It’s offered on five acres at €450,0000, with an option of a further 0.75 acre if desired.

More going on inside than its lean exterior might initially suggest.
