Acquired brain injury clinic Headway will take over former AIB branch in Limerick

Headway, the Acquired Brain Injury charity, has purchased the former AIB Bank branch at 9/11 William Street in Limerick, which AIB shut in 2013.

The branch was one of a number closed in cost-cutting measures implemented by AIB in the wake of the financial crisis.

Headway is based predominantly in Dublin and the south of the country. It operates from nine locations across Dublin (4), Cork (2), Mallow, Limerick and Carlow.

The organisation seeks to bring positive change to the lives of those affected by an acquired brain injury.

The acquisition of the property was overseen by Bannon, along with Power & Associates, who were tasked with managing the sales of seven former AIB branch buildings.

The six other branch buildings were located across Limerick, Clare and Tipperary, the William Street building being the final one to be sold.

This sale was agreed in November 2014. The charity agreed to acquire the property, subject to planning permission for a change of use to a Clinic & Educational Centre.

This was granted by Limerick City and County Council in March of this year.

The former bank building is a high profile, three storey corner unit on the junction of Lower Gerald Griffin Street and William Street in the heart of Limerick’s city centre.

It provides Headway with a centrally located property within walking distance of all city-centre amenities and access to public transport. The property extends to 5,000 sq. ft. over basement, ground and first floor levels.

Although the purchase price was not disclosed, it is believed to be in the region of the €280,000 guide price.

Funding from the JP McManus Charitable Foundation assisted in the acquisition of the property. Headway expects to commence a refurbishment and fitting out of the building over the coming weeks.
