The late Joe Carey, RIP
Mr Carey headed the RE/MAX estate agency franchise in Cork city for many years, and previously traded under his own name as well as having been a co-director of the previous firm Carey Sheahan.
A UCC Dairy Science graduate, Mr Carey got his first property development experience in Canada in the 1960s, and on his return to Ireland began development projects and auctioneering in Cork city, acquiring brownfield development sites in locations like the Kinsale Road and Watercourse Road.
He was involved in developing Fota Retail Park, as well as the Kinsale Road Commercial Park/South Ring Business Park, and developed a number of city apartment schemes, and negotiated the relocation of the Revenue Commissioners from Sullivans Quay to Watercourse Road.
He was involved with the Kerry Literary and Cultural Centre, Listowel, the renewal of the South Presentation Convent site, and chaired UCC’s ArCH Project involved with accessing ancient manuscripts.
Mr Carey was a director of Cork Alliance of Justice and Social Care. He died last Friday after an illness, and is survived by his wife Mary, and five children.
