A spectacular home in Youghal, Co Cork.
Making this four-bed end of terrace house at 28, The Estuary, in Youghal their own, the owners have added a stylish cedar-clad extension and decorated the interior like a showhouse.
Selling agents Sherry FitzGerald Hennessy say that as a trade-up property this has it all — 1,800 sq ft of impeccably-presented modern accommodation, stunning views of Youghal Bay by the Cork-Waterford border, “and a convenient location within a ten-minute walk from the town centre”.
On the market with a guide of €290,000, it’s part of an estate of 36 houses which was built in 2008. Given that most modern houses are two-storey three-bed semis or townhouses, this one is quite unusual in being a three-storey, four-bed townhouse.
The owners bought it off the plans, made slight alterations to the layout as it was being built to adapt it to their needs and, when it was ready, decorated it in warm neutral shades of beige and cream.

Last year they extended at the back — replacing a back patio with a family room providing themselves a place to sit all year round and enjoy the views of Youghal Bay.
Because it has a basement, the house has a layout that’s a little different from the norm. The front entrance is at ground level where a timber floor hallway leads through to a large carpeted sitting room with a marble fireplace and large a bay window with sea views. On this floor there’s also a bathroom and a carpeted bedroom.
Down at the lower ground level is a 20’ long modern kitchen dining room with walnut units, timber worktops, integrated appliances, an island unit and cream porcelain floor tiles. The dining area also has a timber fireplace and is decorated in a warm, wonderful-sounding shade of beige called Gentleness.
In the space where there used to be a patio door there is now an archway and steps down into the newly-created family rooms which has oak flooring and large patio doors opening out to the back gardens. At this level, there’s also a room originally intended as a utility area, but which has been adapted to double up as a playroom, and has timber flooring and toy storage as well as appliances.

Up on the top floor there’s a shower room and three carpeted bedrooms. In the original plans, the master bedroom had an en suite but the owners opted to use the space for a large walk-in wardrobe. This room has patio doors opening out on to a balcony with sea views at the back of the house.
In a major departure from the beige and cream décor found everywhere in the house, the smallest bedroom has been painted in strong Thomas the Tank Engine red, white and blue, like a little train station.
During construction, the owners put in a six-zone multi-room audio entertainment system with ceiling speakers throughout the house. The property has a cosy B3 energy rating, having been fitted with oil central heating and a wood-burning stove.
To the rear, there’s a lawned garden and, to the side, a patio where the owners have found space for a trampoline. Parking spaces are available on street at the front.
Auctioneer Fiona Hennessy says there’s a shortage of modern trade-up and first-time-buyer properties in Youghal, and believes this one could suit either purpose. Having made this property their own, the owners are now buying a site in Youghal and making plans to build their own this time.
