Top-class land on the edge of Bantry town

On the outskirts of Bantry in West Cork, a 34-acre farm has just come on the market; one which is as laden with intrigue as to its true value, because it is blessed with the qualities of golden location and top-class land.

Situated in the townland of Newtown East, this property sits above the main Glengarriff Road on the northern end of the famous coastal town.

“It’s laid out in one division and is within five minutes of Bantry town centre,” says selling agent John Hodnett of Clonakilty-based Hodnett-Forde Property Services.

Below it and around it is a mixture of residential and commercial development.

The land itself certainly holds some potential in that regard: with a derelict dwelling house on the site, it would present at the very least the possibility for the new owner of selling off a one-acre site with dwelling in one of Bantry’s most sought-after parts.

After that, it’s difficult to gauge just what the future holds for this holding.

The only thing one can safely say is that it is good quality land of a very desirable size in today’s market.

“It certainly holds a lot of potential for anybody that wanted to go hobby farming or extend a current holding,” says John. “There’s a stream at its eastern boundary and it’s very well fenced all around.”

One could reasonably hazard a guess at its agricultural value being somewhere in the region of €11,000 to €14,000 per acre but given its location, it’s difficult to put an accurate value on this conveniently- located farmland with unrevealed potential.

The auctioneers are not putting a price on it just yet. It is to be sold by tender, with a closing date of 3pm on Friday, November 20. Until then, the intrigue continues.
