YOU DON’T have to go to California to find a classic beachhouse — this one is located just yards from the sandy seashore in the secluded West Cork inlet of Sheep’s Cove.
Location is near Clonakilty and South Ring, off the coastal road towards Ballinglanna and Barryroe, east of Inchydoney beach and inlet. This offer is a (currently) small 500 sq ft chalet with a balcony and impressive sea views, and the property was originally built as a retreat house for an order of nuns in the 1960s.
The nuns used it for a number of years and as a result the locals began calling the bay Nun’s Cove instead of Sheep’s Cove.

“This is a rare opportunity to buy a property in a beachside location,’’ says Ernest Forde of Hodnett Forde who is seeking offers of €295,000 for the property which is being sold with full planning permission for a spacious two storey residence.
The current owner is a local company which purchased it at the height of the boom for a price thought to be in excess of €500,000. West Cork architect Geraldine Coughlan drew up the plans for a 2,400 sq ft three bed house (see centre pic) and the planning permission for this is still current.
Mr Forde says that as holiday home locations go in West Cork, this one is quite special.
“The cove is secluded and sandy and is very popular with locals - but not well known to visitors,’’ he adds.
He’s already shown the beach chalet to several potential buyers most of which were interested in redeveloping the site. “Quite a few were from Cork but we did get some emails from overseas. We have also had viewers who were interested in developing it and selling it on.”
The existing house although small is said to be in excellent condition and is now a rental property. It has a timber floored kitchen, living room with new units, a shower room and two timber floored bedrooms. Out front there is a raised south facing balcony with views of Clonakilty Bay. The energy rating is a G.
