One of the biggest changes in 1,100 years is about to take place in the old heart of Cork city - right under the nose of No 9 Keysers Court.

There’s a top floor two-bed apartment new to market here next to Keysers Hill on Frenches Quay by the South Gate Bridge, in a part of the original marshy city, occupied for over 1,000 years.

The Vikings put an early settlement here back around 900 AD - and now, the Dutch, via Heineken and Bam Construction are due to build Cork city’s long-awaited Events Centre on the former Beamish and Crawford site, facing Keysers Court across the Lee’s southern channel.

That site has been cleared in recent years of brewery equipment and tanks, set to be replaced by the mixed-use development Brewery Quarter, to include events centre, cinema, entertainment, student apartments, offices, and culture/heritage activities, plus new pedestrian bridges and links.

With the back of Kesyers Court up against the ancient Elizabeth Fort, the apartment here at No 9 will be witness to the next chapter in the long sagas of this South Parish setting, and historian Kieran McCarthy says the name Keysers Hill is one of the oldest in Cork, “Scandinavian in origin, it means the path leading to the quayside.”

Apartment No 9 is atop one of the more modern buildings on Frenches Quay, in contrast to the very old building occupied by Fordes Funeral Home and some other venerable neighbours.

Just east is the South Gate Bridge, and to the west is the 1870s completed William Burges masterpiece, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral.

Selling agent for No 9 Keysers Hill is John Barry, just appointed associate director of Frank V Murphy & Co auctioneers, who says it’s currently tenanted, and is being offered fully furnished at €130,000.

VERDICT: Old roots, new future.
