What you see isn’t necessarily what you get at 5, Cathedral Place, in Cork harbour’s stepped and steepled town of Cobh.

Here, up on a height above much of the Victorian town’s elegant architecture and promenade, and regularly visiting cruise ships, No 5’s got St Colman’s Cathedral as a commanding neighbour, with has harbour views (and jumbled roofs in view beneath too) from all of its main rooms.

It is itself largely refurbished, to a high standard — but was done up primarily for office suites/rooms, and to a good standard, with attractive exterior finishes.

It’s kept its original compact Victorian turret, topped with a weather vane depicting a fish, and has modern timber sash windows, neat dormers poking into the new roof, and carries an overall smart demeanour for itself.

Though it was originally done out as four ground floor rooms, totalling nearly 1,000 sq ft, plus another c 700 sq ft above, largely open plan with bathroom and with some retained beams, there is scope to make it all residential, either as one unit or, more likely two apartments, suggests No 5’s selling agent Johanna Murphy, who guides the property at €180,000 having launched post-Christmas.

Equally, a buyer could use/live in one section and rent out the other floor.

VERDICT: an interesting looking building, in a key Cobh spot with cathedral and parking nearby, and the town and train station downhill, at your feet.
