Schoolhouse fits to a Model T

Ballinascarthy, West Cork €195,000

Sq m 92 (2,060 sq ft)

Bedrooms: 4 Bathrooms: 2

This old schoolhouse in West Cork, which Henry Ford’s father attended before emigrating to America, would make an interesting restoration project: it’s got an acre of land, quite a bit of history and some fine stonework for starters.

Local records show that some of the Fords, including William Ford, father of the founder of the global giant Ford Motor company, went to Kilmalooda School near Ballinascarthy before leaving Ireland in 1847 during the Famine.

Built in the 1800s, it’s an old Church of Ireland four roomed schoolhouse which fell into disuse at the start of the last century. Some time later it was extended and converted into a family home. The result was a 2,000 sq ft property which had a living room, a sitting room, a kitchen/dining room as well as a utility area and a conservatory. The upstairs has four bedrooms including an en suite as well as a bathroom.

Derelict for more than 10 years, hough, the house now needs major restoration. Much of the later additions to the house have fallen into disrepair, but the original old stone walls have endured and the old stone fireplace, which provided heat for generations of children, has also survived.

Surrounded by an acre of land it has mature trees and is bounded by a stone wall at the front. Originally part of the Lisselane estate, the old school house is situated half a mile from the N71, a mile from Ballinascarthy village and three or four miles from Clonakilty.

Seeking offers of €195,000, Ray O’Neill of Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill says this is a property with character and potential which could be turned into a fine family home.

Meanwhile, close-by a five-bed house at Carrig, Ballinascarthy, may appeal to someone looking for something modern that doesn’t require work, in the same location. This has more than 2,000 sq ft of space with a kitchen, two bathrooms, a utility room, two living rooms and two bathrooms as well as half an acre of gardens. Also on the market with Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill it’s guiding at €320,000.

VERDICT: Choice of instant home, or homework.
