Buttevant, Cork Georgian farmhouse  seeking €420,000 has Georgian roots

A beautiful, old-world white-washed courtyard complex of outbuildings and up to 15 stables comes with Spitalfields House — a real, genuine Georgian home near North Cork’s Buttevant, about 15 minutes from Mallow off the Cork-Limerick road.

It also has a walled garden with a tended vegetable plot - a lifestyle offer for any new owners.

Family-owned and cherished, it looks to be the real, comfortable and at-ease with itself home, with a decent 4,000 sq ft to hold families, and up to six bedrooms.

It dates to 1760, wears its great age well and is offered on 2.5 acres by Denis Collins of Collins O’Meara auctioneers in Fermoy at €420,000, and he says many of the original features such as fireplaces, fan-lit door and sash and stained glass windows have been kept. The old-style kitchen even has that quintessential Aga — plus an adjacent scullery, for various storage and scrubbing out needs.

Spitalfields is all very accommodating, and in fact there are two courtyards behind, private gardens, long approach avenue fringed with trees, sweeping entrance walls and pillars, and for those who want the real deal, there’s an option to buy 53 acres of land as well. That land, in two blocks and suitable for lots of farming uses has good farm buildings, and it’s guided separately at another €620,000, or over €11,500 an acre.

VERDICT: The courtyards have as much charm and authenticity as the house itself, and it would nearly be a shame to separate the land from the house, so dig deeper for country life joys.
