Tidy times at Rathbarry, West Cork; €365,000

An old, stone wall which was part of the original Castlefreke estate of Lord Carbery bounds Cloonbeg, a four-bed home which is for sale in West Cork’s Rathbarry village.

Cloonbeg’s a decent-sized block of dormer/two-storey home, which appears to be almost double the depth of some similarly designed homes, and that helps to boosts its total floor area up to 2,300 sq ft, and thus has a good balance of living rooms and sleeping quarters, with two of its bedrooms en suite.

So says agent Maeve McCarthy of Charles P McCarthy in Skibbereen of the four-bed on a landscaped site of two-thirds of an acre, with mature boundaries to the old Castlefreke estate, where the original castle’s multi-million euro renewal has recently hit some speed-bumps.

The woodland surrounding south-west aspected Cloonbeg gives a real sense of seclusion, says Ms McCarthy who describes Rathbarry as one of the most scenic places in West Cork, close to beaches, woodland walks, with Rosscarbery and Clonakilty within a short drive. (Blessed by its valley and coastal setting, and picturesque old limestone post-office and shop, Rathbarry frequently gets top scores in Tidy Town competitions.)

The location, by the Wild Atlantic Way and dramatic surf at Long Strand and Owenahincha, is as equally favoured for full-time family occupation as for holidays, and it’s within an hour’s commute of Cork city, for those thinking of relocating.

VERDICT: Rural and seaside idyll.
