Golf clubs urged get on course with family market

Municipal golf courses can cash in on the growing appeal of the sport among young people and families, according to management at one of Dublin’s most scenic venues.

Malahide Castle Golf and Tennis Club, set in the surrounds of the famous castle in north Co Dublin, has almost completed its renovation, a 12-week project and the most significant at the venue since it was opened in 1984 by Dublin County Council.

The current local authority for the area, Fingal County Council, played a key role in the recent redevelopment.

Gavin Morgan of the club committee said: “We think there is a big opportunity with sports facilities like this throughout Ireland and the UK that are just being left to deteriorate over a long period of time particularly within city and county council sports facilities.

“We were due to start work in November 2013 in order to open for the 1st January 2014 but with delays we didn’t get started until 7th March 2014. It took us 12 weeks in total to renovate and there are still some small works to be undertaken. The transformation is obviously being talked about as a customer commented this morning ‘you know everyone is talking about this place?’ which is great to hear.

“The investment was part of our agreement with Fingal County Council who had a big part to play in the revamp including a new heating system, electronic shutter system and new signage.”

The club has a nine-hole 3-par course, 18-hole pitch and putt club, tennis courts and a golfing academy.
