Not run of the mill: Rineen, West Cork. €165,000

Given the warren of roads, there’s every chance you’ll miss it, too.

At the muddy, estuarine end of the long inlet between famed Castletownshend and Reen, the place was, in previous centuries, home to a hard-working grain mill, associated down the years with several wealthy Cork families. Now, the tall stone mill is derelict, full of romantic hopes of restoration: it’s for sale for €160,000, on 3.5 acres with water frontage.

But, the same sort of money, with the same agent, Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill in Clonakilty, will also get a more cautious buyer a finished entity, described as a gentleman’s residence due to things like the quality of work on the inside windows.

This cottage has been home to Lindy Nixon-Gray, a world champion breeder of Irish sport horses. She bred the renowned event horse, Supreme Rock, winner of the Rolex Grand Slam, a European double gold medal winner, and a silver and bronze medal winner in the Olympics (the only horse to get a perfect 10 in the walk).

Supreme Rock also won back-to-back Badminton horse trials, and now all of Nixon Gray’s horses are prefixed Rineen.

Priced at €165k AMV, with Micheal Duggan, is her former renovated, three-bed roomed, semi-detached home. It measures 1,100 sq ft, with bathroom, and en-suites in the main bedroom.

The main living space is a long, 21’ by 11’ wide, with wood-burning stove set in a stone hearth and chimney-breast. The door has feature leaded glass, and the main bedroom overhead is narrower. Decor-wise, its’s crisp and clean, with natural materials used.

Unexpectedly for its size and semi-detached status, it has an acre of paddock that runs down to the foreshore, and includes four stables, store rooms, etc.

It’s two miles from Union Hall and two miles up the creek from Castletownshend, and five miles from Skibbereen.

VERDICT: The easier, ready-to-go option at Rineen.
