Well-kept city secret
THERE’S something of the theatrical spectacle about Cork City’s Sidney Park — it’s so high up above the city and docks that its two tiers of houses are akin to the Opera House’s Grand and Dress Circle, with daily urban and shipping life as daily matinee and evening shows.
“Sidney Park is one of Cork’s best-kept secrets,” says estate agent and adjacent city resident Andy Moore, as he brings the elegant and detached four-bed home called Hillcrest to market.
Mr Moore has sold several Sidney Park homes in the last year or two, and the most recent sales vary from €320,000 to €565,000 for a large detached on a double site. Hillcrest is guided at €340,000 — and deserves strong viewings at this price level.
While a number of this park’s varied style and era homes have had sensitive and contemporary upgrades, Hillcrest has kept its old world feel and flair. But, it doesn’t feel old-fashioned and has great character and build materials, from its terrazzo hall floor to oak parquet living room floor, through tall ceiling heights, nice fireplaces and stepped gardens.
It’s got a pantry with attractive spalted beech shelving off the rear kitchen add-on, which overlooks the stepped back gardens, and bit of a bonus is the fact there’s rear garden access from Sidney Park’s higher road, via a slender garage/workshop. It might fit a motorbike, but not a car. The front gardens have an old-fashion variety of planting, there’s a glazed entry porch, and glorious docklands and distant city views past the Elysian tower.
Hillcrest has two reception rooms, wide hall, four bedrooms, bright bathroom with shower (the old bath’s in the back garden for herb-growing) and a steep staircase to attic storage.
