Drimna Cottage perfectly sited

Bright and cheerful with lots of varnished pine, this south Kerry property sits on 1.6 acres and there’s lots of room for expansion, Tommy Barker reports

It’s small, and might be dear on a size/price basis at as much as €300 per square foot, but petite Drimna Cottage is not only quite attractively formed, it’s perfectly sited.

Set just inland a bit from serene and scenic Oysterbed Pier, a couple of kilometres from Sneem in south Kerry and near Parknasilla, this stone cottage has its original shape and form, inside all is smartened up — but not extended. It’s bright and cheerful, with white walls, and lots of varnished pine, but not enough of either to be overbearing, and with its thick stone walls (exposed and re-pointed on the outside under a slate roof) is the sort of house that a single solid fuel stove will heat and keep warm.

Drimna is just a one-bed at the moment, so is more of a bolt-hole for a singleton or loved-up couple than a family crash pad for the holidays. Yet, as it’s on a good site of 1.6 acres, there’s space for extension.

It has an open plan kitchen/living dining room, with open hearth fireplace, and overhead is a double bedroom with bathroom with shower. Services include electricity, septic tank and mains water, with a small wooden shed serving as a utility/laundry.

Selling agent is Elaine Daly of Sherry FitzGerald Daly in Kenmare, who says the location is peaceful, with services in Sneem, Kenmare and with golf at Parknasilla. Price is now €159km, down €20,000 from this time last year.
