An A-framed taste of Toblerone

THIS highly unusual triangular or Toblerone-shaped property might be described as a house in a roof rather than a house with a roof.

Situated 2.5kms from Mountshannon village, it’s a timber-framed property which has a balcony and views of Lough Derg at the front. Although it resembles an Alpine chalet, it’s enclosed on two sides in a ski-slope-like roof.

Like most unusual houses in this area, it was built by a non-national. It is owned by a British woman who got a local architect to draw up plans for an A frame split level house which would make the most of the lake views. The design was influenced by a French log cabin but the planning department wasn’t too happy with it initially. By lowering the height she got planning permission and built it in 1998.

Now on the market with Green Valley Properties, the two-bed house has timber flooring and ceilings, double glazed windows and organic paints.

Accommodation includes a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms opening on to decking.

VERDICT: An interesting property for someone looking for rural living in east Clare.
