Interesting features and extra space added to traditional farmhouse

THE architect owner of a traditional farmhouse at Mallow near Coppeen in west Cork has added extra space and interesting features to the old property.

Interesting features and extra space added to traditional farmhouse

In keeping with its original style and appearance, it has retained features such as exposed beams, lathed ceiling and a large open fireplace in the sitting room, but it now has three en suite bedrooms, a modern kitchen and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath as well.

During renovations the owners converted the old lean to shed at the side into extra accommodation. At ground level they put in a shower room and a dressing room and a stairway leading up to a bedroom in a self contained first floor extension.

In the original farmhouse, there’s a large tiled living room with a wood burning stove and a crane, as well as a dining room and a modern kitchen with Shaker-style red alder units and tiled flooring. Also at this level there’s a utility room and a bedroom with an en suite wet room.

Framed by forestry at the rear, the house is on a site of half an acre and has a large field at the front. Located less than a mile from Coppeen it’s around six miles from Enniskeane.

Selling agents Sherry FitzGerald Hinchion say it offers a very attractive mix of the old and the new.

VERDICT: Perfect for a buyer looking for a spacious west Cork property with character, modern comforts and countryside views
