THERE’S something about Montenotte — the quality of the buildings, or that feeling of the last vestige of Empire.

Or maybe it’s the arty, doer-upper vibe that comes with this Cork city territory — if this were London, it would be Notting Hill, a borough unto itself with its own headquarters, Henchy’s, at its centre at St Luke’s Cross.

This was always a good area, the merchant princes stole up here out of the foggy, chesty vapours of the city and literally looked down on all the rest.
