Take your pick in Cobh
Coming in at the lower end of the price scale (try €75,000 for size) is a former harbour pilot’s residence at the famed Holy Ground – a part of the fishing town of some ill-repute that lent a certain air to the well-known shanty/ballad the Holy Ground.
No 8, The Mall is down by the water’s edge, with unobstructed views and a pier right underneath, still in daily use: you can’t but know you’ve a seaside setting and lifestyle option here, says selling agent Johanna Murphy of Victoria Murphy and Daughter auctioneers.
She says the Holy Ground offers some of the best close-up views in Cobh, and reports good early viewings of No 8.
It’s a 1,200 sq ft two-bedroomed home with sitting room, kitchen WC and garage, and has do-up or knock-down and rebuild options for its €75k guide.
Further up the price scale – and further up the hills of Cobh and to the west, with more elevated and far-seeing views – is Almeria, on the Lake Road.
This four-bedroomed, older style (early to mid-1900s?) semi-detached house with good gardens, garage and studio/workspace has a €480,000 AMV quoted by agent Dominic Daly and has a good quality interior, with attractive fireplaces, terrazzo floored hall, oak-floored reception rooms (the L-shaped living room is 22’ by 13’) with views from two windows.
There’s pvc double glazing, gas heating and full view over Haulbowline and Spike Island.
