Wonder on the waterfront

THERE’S only a handful of houses along the front row of the road around Rossbrin in west Cork – it the most scenic of ways of navigating the distance between Ballydehob and Schull.

For anyone who chooses to take the slower way between the two popular, and seasonally busy, tourist village, the rewards are plenty, and the pace is naturally slow. So, imagine living there?

Houses along this special stretch, right near the slipway and boatyard, only rarely come up for sale, and the last one changed hands just a few years ago, for a sizeable sum and has since been largely rebuilt.

Now, along comes another seafront offering, with a €650,000 asking price via agents James Lyons O’Keeffe in Schull, who say a few years ago, a spot like this would have aspired to the €1 million-plus category.

The c 2,000 sq ft four-bedroomed bungalow was built around the 1970s, by a local who’d returned from working overseas, and he gave it a bit of an extra push in its construction.

It was subsequently sold on to a Cork city-based family, who’d used it as a summer home.

Built practically on top of a rocky outcrop, it looks out over the sheltering inlet towards the remaining single stone wall of Rossbrin Castle, and out beyond to Horse Island and sundry, sunny day boating activity around Roaringwater Bay.

It has a nice bit of ground in front, sloping down to the road by the sea so there’s a degree of set-back for privacy with a total site of about half an acre, says agent Stephen O’Keeffe, who’s expecting a good bit of genuine interest in the offering because of the special nature of the setting.

The single-storey house itself has four bedrooms, bathroom and WC, sitting and dining area with partial divider, and kitchen.
