WHEN the Broomfield estate in Midleton was first conceived, it was predicated on the arrival of a commuter rail service, on a reopened line from Cork city to Midleton.

That was back in 1996, Broomfield is more or less done and dusted, and Midleton has possibly doubled in size since.

Now, after one of the longest-ever waits for a train — and quite a bit of tumbleweed blowing down the line as well in the interim — the first service is now due, oh, any month.
