Get the key to Ráth Laoi, start a new chapter, line, verse

RALEIGH, or Ráth Laoi, Macroom is regarded as one of the more salubrious residential areas of the mid-Cork town.

It’s also historically significant as the birthplace of Art Ó Laoire, a Catholic landowner who was fatally shot, it’s said, over a horse.

An officer in the army of Empress Marie of Austria in the 18th century, Ó Laoighaire is commemorated in the poem, Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoighaire, written by his wife, Eibhlin Dubh Uí Chonaill.
