The Oaks: a special ‘tree house’

THE steep and wooded valleys of Glanmire are a favourite spot for self-builders and it’s only when you get to the top of a hill that you see the full impact — there are many one-off houses tucked into its mature woodland.

Hidden behind old trees, and partly obscured, The Oaks is one of a few properties on a steep, hilly site at Sallybrook.

On a quiet, country lane off the old Dublin road, this is an unusual house, in that it harks back to the country style of the eighties and nineties. Some of the fixtures and fittings were built by its owner, a master carpenter, and there’s much use of wood, with cottage-style plastering — The Oaks has a down-home, baronial theme.
