THERE’S an old feminist saying — ‘we are the men we wanted to marry’ — and running with that analogy there were plenty of women with chequebooks at last Tuesday’s auction for 20 Connaught Place, Wellington Road.

In face, it was quite the monstrous regiment, with sustained bidding from that cohort in an overflowing auction room.

Under the pinstriped gaze of auctioneer, Maurice Cohalan, of Cohalan Downing and Associates, the room was asked to open on the derelict, Georgian property at €300,000. The lack of response brought that back to €200,000 at which point there began a healthy ack-ack of €10,000 bids.
