Life’s a secret beach and it’s on your doorstep

RATH, pronounced Ra as in the sun god, is a worshipped but hidden secret beach off the Ring of Kerry.

Near Caherdaniel, Derrynane and the Wavecrest Caravan Park, Rath beach is a safe and sandy spot with a pier for diving from, and rocky headlands provide lots of rock-jumping opportunities for the braver souls.

The beach is also ideal for those into boats, and dinghies, so for those who want to recreate adventurer Thor Heyerdahl’s Ra reed-boat Atlantic crossings there’s a bit of scope - just remember that Ra 1 sank before landfall in the Americas.

Small pleasure craft are pulled up on the white sands at Rath for shelter, with the Derrynane hotel a few hundred metres along the coastline a 1960s design beacon.

Now, a house up for sale in the Rath townland vicinity may well find an affluent buyer (Cork and Limerick families flock to Caherdaniel) into boats and the good things of life on hand in the super-scenic area.

For sale with local estate agent Brid Moran is a three-storey house on a site of three-quarters of an acre. Its elevation and actual height gives it great surrounding views of Kenmare Bay and the Beara Peninsula, with almost all rooms having a view worth gazing at.

It has six bedrooms, as well as living rooms and a basement, and the size and layout would make it perfect for perhaps siblings in an extended family to buy and divide between them, suggests Ms Moran who guides it at €475,000.

It has been in single family use up to now, and has been built over a protracted length of time by its owner and needs only a small amount of extra work to complete. It has a porch, kitchen/dining and family room that measures almost 20’ by 14’, and both it and the separate lounge have great sea views and fireplaces, there’s space allocated for en suite bathrooms by the main bedroom and in one of other five bedrooms, as well as two bathrooms. The basement is laid out in similar format to the ground floor, but needs finishing and it is used as a games room, utility and store.
