A Georgian home, but not quite so old as it seems

LOOKS deceive. If Glendaragh House was a person, it would be just starting secondary school, not ending a long and fruitful life in the retirement community.

A Georgian home, but not quite so old as it seems

The Georgian home on 27 acres is a phoney, but a particularly fine one: it is just about 14 years old, and was given a second burst of investment five years ago to give it a real stamp of country house class inside and out. Think Aga, orchards, lawns, paddocks, sash windows and cornice work - all at the new end of the scale.

Set near Ballyanley, Inniscarra, it is a few miles upriver and inland of Cork city: think Blair’s Inn in Cloghroe as a location marker.

It is a new market arrival, up for sale for the first time by its originators, and carries a €1.85 million-plus price guide with Michael H Daniels & Co.

Mr Daniels points to the absolute dearth of good country houses currently on the Munster and Cork market, and even sales of c €2 million priced homes have been slack this year, he notes.

So, supply is restricted, yet demand for prime residences within an easy strike of Cork city, airport and harbour has never been stronger. This was exemplified by the recent sale of Rockfort House in Innishannon with Property Partners Henry O’Leary: it sold within a few weeks of hitting the market in these pages, getting 50 viewers in week one alone, and is making over €1.6 million for the house, six acres of land, lake and a gate lodge.

Glendaragh House, Inniscarra, is a 10-mile drive from Cork city, in a rural valley along the folds of the River Lee, close to Blarney and Ballincollig’s new town centre.

Well-proportioned, and with 6,000 sq ft of living space, it comes with six bedrooms, four en suites, and tall-ceilinged reception rooms include drawing room, dining room (each about 24’ by 18’), sitting room, and family room. It has a kilometre-long drive for privacy in a glen setting, with gravelled drive leading to limestone steps.

It has American-style barn/stabling with seven loose boxes, tack room, barn and all-weather arena.
